With the hope that the corona virus pandemic will end we are announcing our 2020 Armenian language winter school. We invite international participants who are tired of staying home because of the pandemic and who hope that this situation will end soon, to take part in our 2020 Armenian language winter school. Although we also try to offer online classes of Armenian, we and our participants value classroom experience, networking opportunities, one to one tutoring, academic conversations, good food and traveling to wonderful destinations during our summer and winter courses. We appreciate your time and your commitment to learning Armenian and promise to organize an unforgettable Armenian language course for you. ASPIRANTUM - School of languages and cultures invites international participants to apply and take part in Armenian language winter school to be organized from November 29 till December 19, 2020 in Yerevan, Armenia.

This 21 days’ winter school offers participants to master skills in written and oral modern Armenian, reading and interpreting Armenian texts from different periods as well as rapidly deepening their knowledge in colloquial Armenian.

The Armenian language winter school offers 60 hours of intensive Armenian language classes during 15 days of teaching (from Monday till Friday each week). Every day the participants will receive Armenian language instruction for 4 hours. The classes start in the mornings and the schedule is the following:

09:00 - 10:00 - Armenian language class
10:00 - 10:10 - Coffee Break
10:10 - 11:10 - Armenian language class
11:10 - 11:20 - Coffee Break
11:20 - 12:30 - Armenian language class
12:30 - 12:40 - Coffee Break
12:40 - 13:40 - Armenian language class (fourth and final class - Monday-Friday)

During the Armenian language winter classes the following components will be covered every day to foster the Armenian language knowledge of participants in a rapid pace:

Grammar: Every day class will cover the main grammatical concepts of modern Eastern Armenian language.
Vocabulary: During the 3 weeks course it is anticipated that the participants will learn around 1000 new Armenian words from literary language as well as words used in everyday life, some of which are borrowings from Russian, Persian and Turkish.
Listening: The classes are scheduled in a way that participants with the guidance of experienced instructor learn the Armenian language through songs and movies as well as watching and listening to news and other short videos about interesting and sometimes funny topics and stories about Armenian realities.
Speaking: Every day the Armenian language classes will push the students to exercise their speaking abilities through discussions, conversations and interpretations about different texts and topics.
Writing: Each day the participants of the Armenian language class will have assignments and homework to complete for the next day. The homework will primarily involve writing assignments and those will be assessed by the teacher and discussed the next day’s Armenian language class.
Reading: Every day students will read and discuss political texts, prose and poetry, conversations and news. The corpus of texts to be read and discussed during the classes comprise different prominent Armenian authors, daily conversations as well as news of the day.

Levels:

This Armenian language school is designed for participants, at least 18 years-old, who want to make well-grounded progress in their knowledge of the Eastern Armenian language, deepen their knowledge of Armenian grammar, colloquial speech and literary language.

The Armenian language winter school 2019 will only have 1 group of up to 12 participants (the ASPIRANTUM Armenian language groups during the last 6 years have usually had 4-8 students). The participants must have upper elementary, lower intermediate and intermediate level of Armenian language knowledge before starting the classes with ASPIRANTUM. We do not offer beginner classes or advanced classes of Armenian language. Below are the descriptions of mentioned levels:

1. Upper elementary level (A1-A2) :
You know the alphabet and can read words and expressions sometimes with difficulties; You can write words, expressions and sentences in Armenian; You master certain typical phrases in Armenian and know how to write them; You barely understand everyday Armenian language; You answer with school language and simple turns of phrase

2. Lower intermediate level (A2) :
You have a certain amount of difficulty in understanding the Armenian language except in very precise situations; You are capable of having a simple conversation in Armenian; You understand a simple written text or isolated words in Armenian; You still make a lot of mistakes of expressions, vocabulary and grammar

3. Intermediate level (A2-B1) :
You manage to enter into a discussion but do not always find the appropriate turns of phrase in Armenian; You manage to express your opinion in Armenian and to understand the person you're speaking with; You understand voice recordings (radio, telephone, answering machine, skype, etc.); You have difficulty understanding a person who speaks quickly; You still make pronunciation, grammar and precision mistakes

Our instructor of Armenian language has an extensive experience to teach students of mentioned levels in one group in a way, that all students have a rapid growth in their knowledge of Armenian language.

Assessment:

Before the classes start the instructor of Armenian will send a written test to all confirmed participants as well as will have a video call with all of them to assess their knowledge of Armenian prior to the start of the school. By the end of the school the students will pass a final exam to assess their advancement during the school.

ASPIRANTUM’s Armenian language schools are organized in a way that undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and professors as well as anyone interested in learning Armenian benefit from it the most. So everyone with upper elementary, lower intermediate and intermediate levels of Armenian is welcome to apply and participate in ASPIRANTUM’s Armenian language winter school from November 29 till December 19 in Yerevan.

This price includes reading and writing materials, coffee breaks and cultural trips to Garni temple, Geghard Monastery, Sevan lake and other cultural sights of Armenia which will transform your stay in Armenia into an unforgettable, academically oriented endeavour.

We will not cover: Accommodation, insurance, breakfast, lunch, dinner, visa costs, travel costs to Armenia, from Armenia and in Armenia, any costs of accompanying friends or family members.
