Day 4 - The Iranian Armed Forces

The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran consist of three main branches, namely the Army of the IRI, the IRGC, and the Police Forces of the IRI. In the class we are going to read and discuss texts related to the topic, as well as watch and analyze video-materials related to the topic. Besides, at the end of the class we will have a discussion in Persian about the structure of the Iranian armed forces, which will help students not only to internalize the vocabulary learned in the class, but also have a better understanding of the structure of the Iranian military.

Reading: Today’s reading material includes two articles from the Iranaian official IRNA news agency. In the first, the Commander of the Northwestern Regional Headquarters of the Army Ground Forces emphasizes the Army’s readiness to defend the nation. The second article features another senior Army Commander discussing a recent military exercise and highlighting the Army’s capabilities.

Listening: The students will watch a video report by IRIB News Agency on the first day of the large-scale IRGC military drill titled "Great Prophet-19." 

The second video for today presents an engaging documentary about Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, designer of Iran's ballistic missile project and the beginning of Iran’s ballistic missile program. 

Subject of Conversation: The structure of the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran (ساختار نیروهای مسلح جمهوری اسلامی ایران)

In today’s discussion, students will explore the structure of the Iranian armed forces through a guided conversation supported by the instructor’s input, explanations, and clarifying questions. This dialogue will help students better understand how the armed forces are organized and function, while also reinforcing specialized vocabulary and phrases from the readings and video materials.

- Please carefully read the text of the first article and study the vocabulary.
- Watch the video report from the Listening section and underline the main issues discussed in it in Persian (about 100-150 words).
- Conduct some background research on tomorrow’s topic and related vocabulary to prepare for the discussion.
