Day 1 - Sava's Book

In this lesson, we will learn some information from phonetics, graphics, and grammar of the Old Slavonic Language, necessary for primary reading. After we will read Old Slavonic text and fragments of Sava’s book. Presentation of a photo of the manuscript is also included so extralinguistic features will be considered too.

Phonetics:

- vowel sounds denoted by the letters not presented in the modern Cyrillic alphabet, Old Slavonic vowel system.

- an open syllable in Old Slavonic;

- The indo-European origin of vowels in Old Slavonic.

Graphics:

- letters that are absent in the modern Cyrillic alphabet (ѫ ѧ і ѣ ъ ь).

- writing of the letters И and Н.

- words with the title.

Grammar:

- standard phrases used in manuscripts;

- past verb tense (aorist, imperfect, perfect, plusquamperfect; comparing with the past tense of other modern languages including Slavic);
