Lesson 18: Adverbs, Personal Pronouns

Discussion of the homework (15 min): There will be a discussion of the homework followed by questions/answers and explanation of difficult passages.

Grammar 1: Adverbs of Time  (10 min)

Adverbs of Time are often derived from frozen case forms. Examples are այսաւր 'today', the accusative of այս աւր 'this day'; այժմ 'now', accusative of այս ժամ 'this time'; վաղիւ (also ի վաղիւ or ի վաղիւ անդր) 'tomorrow', instrumental of վաղ 'soon'; երեկ 'yesterday', locative of երեկ 'evening'; այսու հետեւ 'from now onward; consequently', instrumental of այս հետ 'this track, this trail'; որով հետեւ 'since; because', instrumental of որ հետ 'which track'.

Grammar 2: Adverbs of Place  (10 min)

Adverbs of Place generally have the same threefold distinction as the demonstratives (-ս, -դ, -ն), and answer to questions of յ՞ո 'to where?', ՞ուր 'where?', and ուստ՞ի 'from where?'. The following table summarizes the distinction.

There are emphatic forms with the ending -էն: աստէն, այդրէն, անդէն 'in the same place'.One may construct a similar table based upon the distinction 'in', 'out', 'above'.

Exercise 1: Translate into English (25 min)

Grammar 3: Personal Pronouns (15 min)

The personal pronouns ես 'I' and դու 'thou' are the only substantives in Classical Armenian whose nominative and accusative forms differ. Their declensions are as follows.

Փա՜ռք Քրիստոսի ամենազօր յարութեան։
Glory to the all-powerful resurrection of Christ.

Սայլն այն իջանէր ի լեռնէն ի Մասեաց.
That (small) cart coming down the mountain Masis 

Եւ ի վերայ նորա՝ գահոյք ոսկեղէնք,
Has a golden throne on it,

Եւ ի վերայ նորա՝ բեհեզք ծիրանիք,
Covered with purple muslin;
