Lesson 9: Aorist Tense

Discussion of the homework (40 min): Students will explain the declination and conjugation system they have learned from the previous lesson. There will also be a discussion of the homework followed by questions/answers and an explanation of difficult passages.

Grammar 1: Aorist Tense 1 (30 min)

The aorist stems are of two types: the so-called ‘weak’ or ‘first’ aorist, which adds the suffix -եաց- or -աց- to the root; and the so-called ‘strong’ aorist, which have no suffix between the verbal root and the aorist endings. In all cases, the special suffixes of the present stem are dropped.

To Active conjunction belong:

• the verbs with the ending -ալ- and without infix ան; 
• the verbs with the ending -ել- with and without infixes;  
• the verbs with the ending -ուլ-  without infixes.  

Exercise 1: Conjugate the following words (20 min)

• գողանալ -to steal
• կարդալ - to read
• մոռանալ - to forget
• սիրել - to love
• խորհիլ - to think
• արգելուլ - to forbid
• հեծնուլ - to ride
• անկանիլ - to fall

Exercise 2: Translate into English (30 min)

• Խաղացաք գնացաք յերկին Յունաց։
• Իբրև զաչս ի վեր եբարձ՝ հալեցաւ ընդ թագաւորն, սկսաւ խոսել ընդ նմա։
• Մեծարեցաւ ի նմանէ բազում պատուով։
• Թողեր, լքեր  շքեղաշուք ոսկիակուռ զաթոռն քո հայրենի։
• Ես բազում անգամ կամեցայ սիրել զԱրշակ արքայ Հայոց։
• Սպանաւ ի զօրացն Յունացն։
• Անկան կործանեցան ապարանք նոցա։
• Ես եմ որ փախեայ այսօր ի պատերազմէն։
• Հեծաւ արի Արտաշես ի սեաւն գեղեցիկ։
• Ապա Գնել պատանեակն էառ զնա ի կնութիւն իւր: 
• Եւ համբաւ գեղեցկութեան աղջկանն ընդ վայրսն տարածեցաւ:

Grammar 2: Aorist Tense 2 (30 min)

The ‘strong’ aorist has no suffix between the verbal root and the aorist endings. 

To Passive/Middle conjunction belong:

• the verbs with the ending -ալ- and with infix  -ան-
• the verbs with the ending ել/իմ with and without -ան- infix
• the verbs with the ending -ուլ- with -են- and -ն- infixes 

Exercise 3: Translate into English (30 min)

• Աշակերտքն գտին ոչ միայն զմատեանսն, այլ և զթուղթսն։ 
• Զի՞նչ տեսէք ի քաղաքին։
• Ետես Տէր զչարչարնս որդւոցն Իսրայելի յԵգիպտոս և էջ փրկել զնոսա ի ձեռաց Փարաւոնի։
• Մուշեղ սպարապետն Հայոց եհար զզօրսն Պարսից ի հարուածս անհնարինս։
• Իբրեւ անց տօնն, ել Յիսուս ի տաճարն եւ ուսուցանէր։
• Բազումք գայցեն յանուն իմ և ասիցեն, թէ ես եմ Քրիստոսն։
• Տեսաք բազմութիւն վաճառողաց եւ գնողաց։
