Learn Russian through the Soviet and Russian Movies Syllabus

Online course “Learn Russian through the Modern Russian Movies” aims to boost the mastery of the Russian language by delving into the captivating realm of contemporary Russian cinema. Visual and auditory depth of the film helps to immerse students in genuine language usage, cultural settings and a variety of linguistic expressions common in modern Russian society. In this course students will watch six Russian movies and participate in tasks tailored to improve their listening, writing, speaking and reading skills. These tasks provide a holistic language learning experience, applying theoretical knowledge in a practical context. The purpose of the course: introduce the students to modern Russian culture and language via modern movies and thereby form relevant linguistic and cultural competence of students.

Week 1 - Young Generation Problems and Soviet Sport

In week one, students will engage with the films «Молодой человек» (2022) & «Легенда № 17» (2012) complemented by the pre-watching tasks. Before watching students will delve into the movie’s creation background through listening and reading exercise, enhancing students’ vocabulary and contextual understanding for a more informed watching experience. Post-watching tasks will further consolidate students’ language skills. By the end of the week students will be adept at crafting a statement discussing young people problems and problems of the international sports which are the core themes of the movies as well as at providing the feedback on the movie showcasing the ability to express opinion and engage in critical analysis.

Week 2 - Soviet Space Program and Russian Politics

Week two will focus on the films “Время первых» (2017) & «День выборов» (2007), which students will watch after completing some preparatory tasks. These tasks will include listening and reading activities that will introduce the students to the historical and cultural context of the films, as well as enrich their vocabulary. After watching the films, students will do some follow-up tasks to reinforce their language skills. By the end of the week, students will be able to write a statement that analyzes the main themes of space exploration and Russian politics in the films. They will also be able to give critical feedback on the films.

Week 3 - Russia and Armenia; Families, Neighbors and Friends

In the third week, students will examine the aspects of Armenian-Russian relationships in the films «Невеста с севера» (1975) & «Когда наступает сентябрь» (1976), with some pre-watching tasks. Students will acquire knowledge about the movies' background and making by doing listening and reading exercises, which will expand their vocabulary and understanding. Post-watching tasks will strengthen their language skills. By the end of the week, students will be able to compose a statement on interethnic relationships and the movie's central theme and provide feedback, showing their ability to express opinions and engage in critical analysis.
